May is celebrated as Mental health awareness month.
Are you taking care of your mental health by practising proper self-care?
As someone who struggles with anxiety disorder, I’ve learned the hard way that taking care of one’s mental health is no joke. It is very important to take care of ourselves and our well-being.
This article’s primary focus will be on 6 self-care tips to help maintain your mental health.

As business owners, you may sometimes feel like you don’t have enough time in a 24 hour day to get things done. The last thing you have on your mind is to really focus on yourself. “I’m too busy” is the order of the day for most professionals, but remember your health is your wealth and if you do not take care of yourself, your body will get burnt out and will SHUT DOWN literally.
Let’s say you are driving a car for years, you don’t service the vehicle or do repairs. What do you think will happen? The car will eventually shut down and that’s how our bodies work too. If we do not take care of ourselves, our performance at work and our day to day activities will be affected.
So here goes:
Channel your energy into something that you love...
What is it that you love? Is it dancing, or is it playing a game of pool?
For me it’s journaling. Whenever I’m down or need to relax, I write down how I’m feeling and trust me it’s therapeutic.
Whatever your hobbies are, make time for them. It relaxes your mind and reduces stress levels.
Check-in with friends...
Valuable friendships are important, check in with friends, talk with them or just hang.
You can also go out to have drinks or dinner.

Get some me-time...
How about a day at the spa?
Get a massage, or run a warm bath with a glass of champagne and read a good book.
For homebodies like myself, just stay home and watch a good movie curled up in your pj's with some fat-free yoghurt.
This is definitely a way to de-stress.
Exercise
Exercise relaxes you.
It relieves stress.
It promotes proper mental health.
Rest
Rest, Rest
I will not emphasize this enough but resting is very important towards self-care.
Always ensure you get enough sleep and time to rest. This will relax your mind, body and soul.
Balanced meals...
Ensure that you eat balanced healthy meals which consist of foods from all the basic food groups. This will help to maintain your physical as well as your mental health.
